"NYPD Crime Stats - May 2022 vs 2021"

This is very worrying - I wonder what is at the root of these stats?

Is this return to pre-covid crime levels as people come back out of Covid sheltering?

Is this general built up of anger during Covid that people are now lashing out?

Is this a result of less economic support/stimulus? (that people are turning to crime?)

Has any policy shifted since the new mayor stepped in? (More street presence - and more reported complaints? Less street presence - and more opportunity for crime?)

Are there are any fundamental shifts (police levels, population density, greater inequality)

Also, would be curious to hear on an anecdotal level from someone who lives in the city - what is different about New York in 2021 vs 2022?

Also, since I'm most familiar with Manhattan would be interesting to see if this trend / stats is representative across boroughs.
