"U.S. Total Number of Legal Abortions "

The CDC began collecting U.S. abortion incidence statistics in 1969. However, states are not required to report. The data excludes California, Maryland, and New Hampshire, which do not report their statistics. Therefore, the CDC's surveillance data is likely underreported. The Guttmacher Institute, which conducts a national survey, reports higher numbers. In 2019 the CDC reported a total of 629,898 abortions nationally. The Guttmacher Institute reported 916,460 total abortions. "According to the Guttmacher Institute, the U.S. abortion rate ticked upwards in 2019 and 2020 after having decreased for nearly three decades. Both abortion proponents and opponents have previously cited restrictions to abortion access as the reason for the years-long decline."²
