The United States has been a top destination for international students since the mid 20th century. Records indicate 25,464 international students in 1948/49, growing over the years to where it sits in 2020 at 1,075,496.
China and India have been the source of the majority of international students in the US since the turn of the century. The pandemic has led to declines in enrollment across almost every country in the 2020-2021 academic year.

The rise in international students from Saudi Arabia post-2005 can be attributed to the King Abdullah Scholarship program, launched as part of agreements with former President George W. Bush to boost educational and cultural programs between the two countries.
