Attendance at museums and galleries worldwide declined sharply in 2020 over the previous year due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. That year, museums and similar cultural institutions around the globe had to stay close for several months as governments implemented emergency restrictions to limit the spread of the virus.
Overall, the Louvre in Paris, France, recorded the highest figure in 2020, welcoming roughly 2.7 million visitors. In 2019, it registered around 9.6 million visitors. The National Museum of China in Beijing placed second on the ranking in 2020, with 1.6 million visitors.
